iPhone 18 Pro Max loses AT&T service; Apple confirms bug
Apple confirmed on October 2 that some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones on AT&T lose service, even for 911. iOS 27.0.1 is the fix, but hit phones need replacing.

Apple confirmed on October 2, 2026 that a bug can cut some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones off from AT&T's network, leaving them unable to make calls. The affected phones drop to "SOS" mode and lose calls, texts and data, and AT&T warned that this includes 911 calls. Apple says the iOS 27.0.1 update addresses the problem, but a phone that has already lost service needs to be replaced.
What Apple and AT&T said
Apple's statement, reported by Engadget, was brief. The company said it had "identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network." The issue "may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls," Apple said.
AT&T moved first. On October 1, it sent customers a text message about the problem, MacRumors reports. "Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911," the text said. It told owners to update their phones immediately.
A day later, AT&T said it was working with Apple. In a statement to MacRumors, the carrier said "Apple has released a software update to address an issue." That issue "may affect calls, data, texts, and 911 calls on a small number of Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max phones," AT&T said.
What owners are seeing
The symptoms are the same across reports. The phone shows the "SOS" symbol in place of signal bars. It cannot make calls, send texts or use 4G or 5G data, according to Engadget. MacRumors reports the problem can come and go or last continuously.
Problems started soon after launch. The iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale on September 18, and MacRumors says reports began in late September. It adds that thousands of customers have posted about the issue across several platforms.
Why only the Pro Max
The US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone with a Qualcomm cellular modem, Engadget and MacRumors report. A modem is the chip that connects a phone to the mobile network. The other new models use Apple's own C2 modem. That split may explain why only one model on one carrier is affected, though Apple has not named a cause.

Does iOS 27.0.1 fix it?
The answer depends on whether your phone already has the problem. Engadget reports that iOS 27.0.1 was released to address the issue, and that owners should also check for a carrier settings update. But a phone that has already lost signal cannot be repaired with software. It needs a replacement.
There is some confusion around the update. MacRumors notes that Apple's release notes for iOS 27.0.1 mention a Face ID fix, not the network problem. Many users told MacRumors the update did not solve their issue. That fits Apple's position: the update may prevent the fault, but it does not repair a phone that already has it.
Getting a replacement
AT&T says affected owners can go to an Apple Store or an AT&T store for help. MacRumors reports that some people were refused a warranty replacement, so results may vary by store.
Timing matters for early buyers. MacRumors notes that October 2 was the last day to return a launch-day phone under Apple's 14-day return policy.
What this means for developers
For IT teams that manage company phones, push iOS 27.0.1 to every iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T now. Also push the carrier settings update Engadget mentions. Then check each device for the SOS symbol, and send any affected phone for replacement. A software update will not bring it back.
Test emergency calling on work phones in the field. AT&T's own warning covers 911 calls. Staff who work alone or travel need a backup, such as a second line, until their device is confirmed healthy.
For app developers, expect odd reports from this one model. A spike in timeouts or "no connection" errors from iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T may be the network bug, not your code. Filter your analytics by device model and carrier before you chase it. Make sure your app handles a lost connection gracefully, with clear offline messages and retries.
Watch for a fuller fix. Apple has not explained the cause or said whether a later update will cover more cases. MacRumors' reports of declined replacements suggest the process is still uneven.
