Reports of cracked inner screens on Apple's iPhone Duo cluster near the phone's central hinge support, repair site iFixit found in a teardown published October 25, 2026. The phone went on sale on October 23. Within two days, owners were posting photos of inner displays that broke along the fold, some after only a few openings.

iFixit still gave the Duo a provisional repairability score of 5/10, the highest it has given any foldable phone. Apple has not commented on the cracks.

What owners are reporting

The damage is on the 7.6-inch inner display, the large screen that folds in half. Breaks run along the fold and the hinge, Cult of Mac reports, and launch-day photos show a similar pattern from phone to phone.

Some failures came very quickly:

  • Six hours: iFixit cites one owner whose screen failed within six hours of purchase.
  • Fewer than 20 folds: Cult of Mac reports an Australian owner whose screen broke after fewer than 20 openings. Apple replaced that phone.
  • About four folds: one Reddit user wrote, "Maybe folded it 4 times, hinge got tight and then made a loud pop when I pushed past it," iFixit reports.
  • One day: a user in China posted on X that "after just one day of use, the hinge has already started protruding," according to Cult of Mac.

Cult of Mac calls it "too early to call it Crackgate." No one outside Apple knows how many phones are affected.

What the teardown found

iFixit did not name a single broken part. It found that the breaks cluster near the point where a gap for a flex cable meets the central hinge support. A flex cable is the thin ribbon that carries signals across the fold. The cracks sit slightly lower, at a spot where several edges meet.

The hinge has more than 100 components, Cult of Mac notes. Apple's press release, quoted by the same outlet, calls the Duo "built to last with an innovative hardware design and a precision hinge."

Stress tests by YouTube channels found the inner screen easy to damage. PhoneBuff dropped the phone 1.5 meters onto its hinge, Cult of Mac reports, and by the fourth drop the left side of the inner display had failed. JerryRigEverything bent the phone the wrong way and was left with a "permanent, unrepairable $1,000-down-the-drain green line."

What a repair costs

iFixit's score covers how hard the phone is to fix, not how sturdy it is. "This is the most repairable foldable we've ever taken apart," iFixit writes, while warning that the bar for foldables is low.

The cover layer is the thin film on top of the folding screen. Its low price was known before launch, as covered in iPhone Duo cover layer is replaceable, $19 with AppleCare+.

The batteries are a bright spot. "Apple brought its electrically releasable adhesive to both cells, and it works beautifully," iFixit writes. That glue lets go when a small current runs through it, so the batteries come out without prying. Replacing the inner screen is another matter. iFixit calls the job slow and delicate even with Apple's tools.

For now, iFixit says Apple is offering replacement units. It expects screen parts to reach Apple's Self Service Repair program soon.

What this means for developers

Most readers here are buyers, not repair technicians, but early hardware failures matter to anyone who budgets for devices.

  • Hold off on fleet purchases. If your team planned to buy Duos for app testing, wait until Apple explains the cracks or ships a fix. Demand already pushed US shipping into 2027.
  • Buy AppleCare if you buy now. Without coverage, one cracked inner screen costs $999.
  • Document any failure early. Owners with photos and dates have a stronger case for a replacement while Apple is swapping units.
  • Test the fold carefully. App developers using a test device should open it gently and fully. Several reports describe failures after a tight or forced fold.
  • Watch for an Apple statement or repair program. A service program would change the cost picture overnight. Until then, the cause and the number of affected phones are unknown.
