Broadcom has agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion to help pay for the AI chips Anthropic leases, Reuters reported on October 1, 2026, citing Anthropic's IPO prospectus. The loan would cover about a third of a $125.2 billion, five-year commitment to rent Google's TPU computing capacity. It makes Broadcom both a supplier to the maker of Claude and one of its biggest lenders, a link Anthropic's own filing calls a potential conflict of interest.
A prospectus is the document a company prepares before it sells shares to the public. It lists the company's finances and the risks investors take on.
How the Broadcom loan works
The money comes as convertible notes, according to the Reuters report carried by Investing.com. A convertible note is a loan that can later be swapped for shares in the borrower. If Anthropic's stock does well, Broadcom could end up owning part of the company instead of being repaid in cash.
Anthropic said it does not expect to sell any of the notes before its IPO is complete, Reuters reports. The company also put cash into a restricted account for Broadcom's benefit in April 2026.
The chips in question are TPUs, or tensor processing units. They are Google's custom chips for training and running AI models. Reuters says Broadcom and Google will give Anthropic access to several gigawatts of next-generation TPU capacity starting in 2027.
Tech Startups describes the deal as circular. Broadcom helps fund Anthropic, and Anthropic then uses that money to lease computers built around technology Broadcom helps supply.
What Anthropic's filing says about the risk
Broadcom's two roles could hurt Anthropic, the prospectus warns. Quartz, in a report carried by Yahoo Finance, says the filing flags "potential conflicts of interest" that could affect Anthropic's access to computing power.
Broadcom's wider fundraising is large too. Quartz reports that Broadcom is seeking up to $80 billion in debt for the arrangement. Apollo and Blackstone separately arranged a $36 billion debt deal, it adds.
The numbers in Anthropic's IPO prospectus
Reuters and Fortune have reported the prospectus's contents since September 29. Fortune described the document as leaked. The main figures reported so far:
| Measure | Figure | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue, 2025 | About $4.6 billion, up 12-fold from 2024 | Reuters, Fortune |
| Revenue, Q1 2026 | $4.73 billion | Fortune |
| Revenue, Q2 2026 | $11.5 billion | Fortune |
| Operating loss, 2025 | More than $8 billion | Reuters, Fortune |
| Net loss, 2025 | $42 billion, including about $34 billion in accounting charges | Reuters, Fortune |
| Infrastructure spending, 2025 | $7.33 billion, three times 2024 | Reuters |
| Cash on hand | $20.28 billion | Fortune |
| Cloud and infrastructure obligations | $518 billion | Reuters, Fortune |
| IPO valuation target | More than $2 trillion | Reuters, Fortune |
Reuters says the $34 billion in accounting charges are tied to convertible financing instruments. That is why the net loss is so much larger than the operating loss.
Customer concentration stands out. Nearly a quarter of Anthropic's revenue comes from two customers, both Reuters and Fortune report. Reuters expects the listing after the U.S. midterm elections in November.
The Broadcom loan adds to a long list of compute deals. Anthropic committed $35 billion over six years to Lambda for computing capacity, as Tech AI Wire reported in September.
What this means for developers
Plan for more Claude capacity from 2027, but not before. The new TPU capacity starts in 2027, according to Reuters. Rate limits and peak-hour slowdowns are unlikely to ease because of this deal in the next year.
Keep a second model ready. Anthropic's own filing says its chip supply depends on partners whose interests may differ from its own. If your product runs on Claude, test a fallback model on your main tasks now and keep the switch cheap.
Read the risk section when the prospectus is filed publicly. It is the most complete public account of Anthropic's costs, suppliers and customers. It will help teams judge long-term pricing and capacity before signing multi-year contracts.
Watch prices after the IPO. Public investors will see every quarter's losses and the $518 billion in obligations. That pressure can push a company to raise prices or narrow discounts. Budget with some room for that.
