TikTok launched two shopping features in the United States on October 5, 2026: an AI Shopping Assistant and a one-click checkout called Buy Direct. Both work from the For You feed, the app's main stream of videos, and the purchase finishes without leaving TikTok, TechCrunch reports. TikTok built them with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. That makes the app a checkout counter for brands that sell through those platforms, not just a place to find products.

What TikTok launched

The Shopping Assistant is an AI agent, a program that holds a conversation and acts on a user's behalf. Crypto Briefing reports that it answers product questions in real time and keeps the context of the conversation. A viewer who sees a jacket in a video could ask about it without searching elsewhere.

Buy Direct is the payment step. It lets a viewer buy from the feed with one tap, Crypto Briefing reports. Both features sit under a program TikTok calls Agentic Commerce. The phrase means shopping where software agents handle steps a person used to do by hand.

David Kaufman, TikTok's global head of monetization and product partnerships, described the aim. The AI can "close the gap between discovery and purchase," he said, as quoted by Crypto Briefing.

Why the partners matter

The partner list explains the reach. Shopify, Salesforce and Shoplazza run online stores for many brands. Stripe processes card payments for many online businesses. Artiverse frames the launch as TikTok taking shopping beyond its own marketplace, TikTok Shop.

TikTok Shop is already large. TechCrunch puts its 2025 US sales at $15.8 billion, or 18% of all US social commerce. Social commerce means buying products directly inside social media apps. TechCrunch also cites two wider figures: $81 billion in US GDP generated through TikTok activity, and 54 million Americans who bought something after watching a TikTok video. None of the reports says who produced those last two estimates.

How it fits the wider race

TikTok is not alone in putting an AI agent between a shopper and a store. OpenAI added a virtual try-on button to ChatGPT shopping on October 1. In September it began testing Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT, alongside a Shopify app for its ads. Each company wants the moment a person decides to buy to happen inside its own app.

TikTok's version starts from a video feed rather than a chat box. The shopper sees the product first and asks questions second. That order suits quick, impulse purchases.

What this means for developers

For teams that run a brand's store on Shopify, Salesforce or Shoplazza, the first job is product data. An AI assistant can only answer questions about sizing, stock and shipping from the data it receives. Check that your catalog has complete, accurate fields before you enable the channel, because a wrong answer from the assistant becomes your support ticket.

Engineers who own payments should ask Stripe and the commerce platform how Buy Direct orders arrive. Find out how they are labeled, refunded and reconciled against your existing order flow. Plan the reporting too: marketing will want TikTok sales split from other channels on day one.

For product and marketing leads, budget a test rather than a full rollout. The launch is US-only, and none of the reports gives conversion results for the new features yet. Watch for TikTok's terms on fees, returns and who owns the customer relationship before you move a large share of sales into the app.
