Sony announced a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for Japan on October 13, 2026. It costs 55,000 yen including tax, goes on sale on November 19 and only works with the console language set to Japanese. That is far below the 97,980 yen Game Rant lists for a standard PS5 in Japan.
What Sony announced
The PlayStation Blog in Japan gives the details:
| Detail | PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black (Japanese only) |
|---|---|
| Model number | CFI-2200B02S |
| Price | 55,000 yen, tax included |
| Pre-orders | From October 20, at retailers and online stores in Japan |
| Release | November 19, 2026 |
| Storage | 825GB custom SSD |
| Disc drive | None built in |
The console is a black version of the existing PS5 Digital Edition. Sony's spec sheet lists an eight-core AMD Zen 2 processor, a 10-teraflop graphics chip and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. A DualSense controller comes in the box, with Astro's Playroom pre-installed. Sony's post lists the console at about 2.5 kg.
The post also points buyers to a Midnight Black DualSense controller and the PlayStation Portal as matching accessories. Gaming.net notes that the Midnight Black range already includes controllers, headsets and the Portal.

The Japan-only lock
The console works only with a PlayStation account where the console language is set to Japanese and the country or region is set to Japan, Sony's post says. Game Rant reports that no matching model has been announced for other countries.
Sony already sells a Japanese-language-only Digital Edition, which its post lists as on sale now. Tech4Gamers reports that the earlier model, CFI-2200B01, launched on November 21, 2025, also at 55,000 yen. Gaming.net says the new model costs the same.
The price matters because a standard PS5 in Japan costs 97,980 yen, according to Game Rant.
Dollar conversions differ by outlet. Game Rant puts the price at roughly $349, Gaming.net at about $365.
The disc drive and warranty
A matching Midnight Black disc drive, model CFI-ZDD1J01, costs 11,980 yen including tax. It also goes on sale on November 19.
Sony's post also describes a warranty campaign for buyers of the Japanese-only Digital Edition. Eligible buyers who register can extend the warranty from one year to two, until March 31, 2027.
Download-only games from 2028
The same post includes a notice about game discs. PlayStation games first released from January 2028 will be sold as downloads only, according to Sony's Japanese blog. Disc versions of games released before then remain usable.
For buyers in Japan, a console without a built-in drive becomes less of a compromise. Players can still add the disc drive for older games.
What this means for developers
- Plan for download-only releases in Japan. Sony's post says PlayStation games released from January 2028 will be download-only. Publishers should budget for digital storefront pricing and file sizes, not packaging.
- Watch download sizes. A Digital Edition with an 825GB SSD fills up quickly. Smaller install sizes and optional content packs matter more to players without discs.
- Localize for Japanese. These consoles run only in Japanese. Games sold to them need complete Japanese text and store listings.
- Do not expect the price abroad. No outlet reports a similar model for other markets. Price planning outside Japan should use local PS5 prices.
