Amazon redesigned its whole Kindle e-reader lineup on October 1, 2026. Every model now has a flush-front screen with no raised border, and the device color wraps from front to back. The 6-inch Kindle starts at $149.99 and is on sale now. The Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft ship on October 28, starting at $199.99 and $289.99.

What is new in the design

The change starts with the screen. Amazon says it built every model on a new "reverse stack" display construction, which it calls a first for e-readers. It lets the screen sit flush with the front of the device instead of in a recessed frame, so the devices are thinner.

Kevin Keith, Amazon's vice president of devices, said the team started over. "The team redesigned the new family of devices from the ground up, beginning with a newly designed reverse stack display construction," he said.

The color of each device now runs edge to edge. There are five colors across the lineup: Ube (a purple), Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, Graphite and Fig. TechMyMoney reports that Fig is new to e-readers. The aluminum versions use 80% recycled aluminum, Amazon says.

Prices and models

Each of the three models comes in a standard version and a premium version. Here is the full US lineup, from Amazon's announcement and TechMyMoney's ship dates:

The Signature Editions add an aluminum back, a front light that adjusts on its own, charging from a dock and double-tap page turns, according to Thurrott. Every model except the base 6-inch Kindle is waterproof. Kids editions of all three models start at $179.99 and include 12 months of Amazon Kids+, Amazon's subscription for children's books and apps.

The lineup goes on sale in 19 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Japan and Australia.

Model by model

The 6-inch Kindle is the smallest. Keith called it "the most pocket-sized Kindle we've ever made." Amazon says it opens books 30% faster than the previous model and lasts up to six weeks on a charge.

The Paperwhite has a 7-inch screen and lasts up to 12 weeks, which TechMyMoney says is double the previous generation. Amazon says it uses an oxide backplane, the layer of transistors that drives the screen, for higher contrast and deeper blacks.

The Colorsoft is the color model. TechMyMoney reports it shows black-and-white content at 300 pixels per inch and color at 150. Thurrott says its front light uses nitride LEDs and tiny deflectors to cut stray light and keep brightness even.

The accessories

Amazon also launched the Kindle Click, a $34.99 Bluetooth remote for turning pages. Thurrott says it works with Kindles from 2024 or later. A page-turn cover costs $79.99, a charging dock costs $59.99, and other covers start at $39.99.

What this means for developers

If you publish ebooks or comics, plan for the Colorsoft's two resolutions. Color appears at half the sharpness of black-and-white text, 150 pixels per inch against 300. Fine color detail, small labels inside illustrations and thin colored lines will look softer than the same art in grayscale. Test color pages on a real device before release.

If you build reading apps or format books, check layouts on both screen sizes. The base Kindle stays at 6 inches while the Paperwhite and Colorsoft use 7 inches.

For schools and IT teams buying in bulk, note the staggered dates. The base Kindle is available now, but the Paperwhite and Colorsoft do not ship until October 28. Budget for the Kids editions at $179.99 if you need the bundled Kids+ year.

Check device age before buying the Click remote. It supports Kindles from 2024 onward, so older units in a classroom or office set will not work with it.
