Nvidia's DLSS 5 ships this week for RTX 50 cards at a 50-60% cost

Nvidia's DLSS 5 launches this week, and it only runs on RTX 50 series graphics cards. DSOGaming reports the performance cost of an official implementation at around 50 to 60 percent. That figure is the story, because it reverses what DLSS has been for since it shipped.

DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling. Through version 4 it was a way to gain frame rate: render fewer pixels, then use a model to fill in the rest. DLSS 5 spends frame rate instead of earning it.

The launch date is not settled

Two outlets published different dates, and neither gives a time or a time zone.

Tom's Hardware says September 3. DSOGaming says September 4. Both name NBA 2K27 as the first supported game. Notebookcheck, writing back on March 16, 2026, said only that the release would land in fall 2026.

Support is narrow and clear. Tom's Hardware reports availability on all RTX 50 series GPUs, laptop GPUs included, plus GeForce NOW. Notebookcheck's March report said the feature was exclusive to the RTX 50 series, with no confirmed availability for RTX 40, 30 or 20 cards.

What neural rendering actually does

This is a different technique from earlier DLSS versions, not a bigger version of the same one.

Notebookcheck describes DLSS 5 as a "real-time neural rendering model" that works from 2D screenshots and motion vectors. Motion vectors are the data a game engine already produces to describe how each pixel moved between frames. Earlier DLSS releases used transformer and convolutional network models.

One detail from the March demonstration deserves attention. Notebookcheck reports Nvidia showed it running on two RTX 5090 cards, specifically to avoid running out of video memory.

The cost, and why it inverts DLSS

Take the 50 to 60 percent figure seriously, with the caveat that DSOGaming does not state which GPU or game produced it.

A cost that size changes what the feature is. Older DLSS versions were a performance setting: turn them on, get more frames. DLSS 5 is a quality setting that you pay for in frames. Nvidia has made progress here, and DSOGaming reports the company improved DLSS 5 performance five times over since March 2026, but the remaining cost is still substantial.

DSOGaming lists the games expected to support it beyond NBA 2K27.

Why March went badly

The technology arrived to a hostile reception, and the objection was aesthetic rather than technical.

Notebookcheck records the backlash in the players' own words. Critics said the technique was "messing with artistic vision and serious ethical concerns", called the output "AI slop", and complained it lacked "character or soul". The complaint is that a model injecting lighting and detail overrides what the artists chose.

There is also a measurement trap. DSOGaming notes that unofficial mods of DLSS 5 show major flickering and artifacts, and that official implementations will differ. Judging the real thing by those mods will mislead you.

What this means for developers

If you ship a game, the first decision is where this belongs in your settings menu. DLSS 5 is not a performance option, so do not group it with the ones that buy frames. Put it with quality settings, and make sure your automatic preset logic knows the difference. A preset that enables DLSS 5 to help a struggling machine will make things worse.

Never enable it by default. A 50 to 60 percent cost is the kind of change a player must opt into. A driver-side or launcher-side default would generate support tickets you cannot fix in your own code.

The install-base arithmetic is worth doing before you commit engineering time. This runs on one GPU generation. Check your own telemetry for the share of players on RTX 50 hardware, and weigh the integration against that number rather than against the size of Nvidia's announcement.

Two testing notes. First, watch video memory rather than just frame time. Nvidia used two RTX 5090s in its demonstration to dodge a memory bottleneck, which is a strong hint about headroom on a single card. Second, benchmark only official builds. The modded versions circulating have artifacts that are not representative.

Finally, the schedule is genuinely unclear. Two outlets disagree on whether this lands September 3 or September 4. If you have a patch or a marketing beat timed to it, confirm the date with Nvidia rather than with a headline.
