Nouveau boots on Nvidia's DGX Spark GB10, unofficially

A Red Hat engineer got the open-source Nouveau driver and NVK running on Nvidia's DGX Spark GB10. It took about 100 patches, and upstreaming isn't settled yet.

The open-source graphics stack that Linux normally relies on for Nvidia hardware now boots, unofficially, on one of Nvidia's newest AI systems. David Airlie, a graphics engineer at Red Hat, posted on September 8, 2026 that he got Nouveau and NVK running on the DGX Spark GB10, a Grace Blackwell superchip system. "I just wanted to see it work," he wrote.

Nouveau is a reverse-engineered kernel driver for Nvidia GPUs, built without Nvidia's cooperation by reading how the hardware behaves. NVK is its counterpart for Vulkan, the graphics and compute API. Both are normally kept up by volunteers and a handful of paid engineers working from public information, not Nvidia's own driver source.

What it took

Getting this far needed roughly 100 patches across Nouveau and NVK, plus a new port of Nvidia's firmware, version 610. Phoronix reports the patch set is invasive, touching display code and how the driver handles video memory.

Airlie's post explains what made GB10 different from the Nvidia GPUs Nouveau already runs on. The chip needed new handling for depth and stencil buffers, which store per-pixel drawing data. It also needed changes to how both drivers handle zero dedicated video memory, since GB10 shares memory with the CPU instead of carrying its own. On top of that, the driver's L2 cache handling needed fixes.

What works, and what Airlie isn't sure about yet

The post confirms display support and that the system boots with this stack. It does not report the state of 3D rendering or GPU compute, the two things a Grace Blackwell system is actually built to do fast.

Airlie is candid about what happens next. "I'm not sure how best to upstream it all," he wrote. "It's 100 patches and a new firmware which my mean it's a wait for nova type situation, but I just wanted to see it work." The patches live on two work-in-progress branches, one for Nouveau and one for Mesa's NVK, and neither has been submitted for review yet.

Nova is the name of a newer Nvidia kernel driver effort Airlie also works on. His comment suggests GB10 support may eventually land there instead of in classic Nouveau, rather than through this patch set directly.

What this means for developers

Do not read this as "Linux now runs fully open-source on DGX Spark." It reads as "a senior engineer got it to boot," which is a meaningfully earlier stage. Compute performance, the part that matters most for a machine built for AI workloads, is not yet reported working.

If you specifically need a fully open graphics and compute stack on Grace Blackwell hardware, watch the Nova driver rather than these branches. Airlie's own comment points there as the likely long-term path, and patches sitting on a personal work-in-progress branch can vanish or get rewritten without notice.

The zero-VRAM handling is the detail worth remembering if you work on drivers yourself. Unified memory between CPU and GPU is becoming more common in AI-focused hardware, as it is on Apple's own local-AI-focused Macs. It breaks assumptions that graphics drivers have carried for decades. Expect more of this kind of rework as other vendors ship similar designs.
