Workday agreed on October 13, 2026 to acquire C1.ai, a startup that controls what people and AI agents can access inside a company. The deal was announced at Workday Rising, the company's annual conference. Workday also launched agents that run HR and finance tasks on their own, and said its Sana assistant will work inside Claude, Slack and other AI tools. Together, the moves bet that companies will need to manage software agents the way they manage staff.
The C1.ai deal
C1.ai has "signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by Workday," chief executive Alex Bovee wrote in the company's announcement. Neither company disclosed a price or an expected closing date.
C1.ai sells identity governance software, which decides who can open which systems and keeps a record of what they did. It says its platform replaces older identity and access management tools. It covers every human and AI agent identity and records every action. Bovee wrote that he and Paul Querna bet six years ago that identity would become the most important control point for companies.
SiliconANGLE reports that Workday will combine C1.ai with its Agent System of Record. That system tracks the AI agents a company runs. Together, they would govern agent access across Workday and other enterprise systems.
"Joining Workday will get our mission to far more organizations, far faster," Bovee wrote.
Agents that act without being asked
Workday also launched what it calls autopilot agents. They watch for changes in company data and do routine work in the background. People keep the final decisions.
| Agent | What it does | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Talent Acquisition Agent | Watches open roles and surfaces candidates; a recruiter approves outreach | Early adopters now, general availability in early 2027 |
| Payroll Agent | Checks for problems before payroll runs | Early adopters in early 2027 |
| Accounting Agent | Runs continuous financial testing | Early adopters in early 2027 |
| Deployment Agent | Flags new release features and compliance changes | Early adopters in early 2027 |
According to Workday's announcement, customers choose which actions run automatically and which need review. Every action is logged.
"Probabilistic AI is great at guessing, but in payroll and finance, a good guess isn't good enough," said Gerrit Kazmaier, Workday's president of product and technology.
Sana moves into other AI tools
Sana is Workday's AI assistant, which it calls an agentic experience and orchestration engine. Workday says Sana will now work inside Claude, Gemini Enterprise, Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft Teams and Slack.
Workday says Sana checks company policies, permissions and approvals before it calls on Workday's agents. The outside tools never get raw Workday data. Sana in Claude Cowork is in early access now. Workday gives late 2026 for Sana's arrival on the other platforms.
SiliconANGLE reports that Sana is also becoming the new Workday Home, the screen where employees start their work. That home can generate interactive apps using Jev, the decision model from TypeSafe AI, which raised $870 million last week.
"AI is the new UI," Joel Hellermark, Workday's chief AI officer, told SiliconANGLE.
What this means for developers
- Treat agents as identities. C1.ai's pitch is that every AI agent needs its own permissions and audit trail, like an employee. Teams building agents should give each one a distinct identity now, not share a human's login.
- Expect governance checks in the loop. Sana checks policies and approvals before acting. Agents that call Workday will likely face the same gates, so build for approval steps and denials.
- Plan integrations through Sana, not raw data. Workday says outside tools get no direct data access. Apps that pull Workday data into Claude or Slack should expect to go through Sana instead.
- Watch C1.ai's roadmap. Bovee's post does not say what changes for current C1.ai customers. Teams using it should ask about pricing and support before the deal closes.
