Lambda, the Nvidia-backed company that rents out AI computing power, is raising up to $4 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported on October 6, 2026. The round values it at $14.5 billion before the new money. Blackstone and Coatue Management are leading the round, according to Reuters' summary of the report on Investing.com. It is meant to be Lambda's last private round before a stock market listing planned for 2027. The valuation is more than double what investors paid less than a year ago.
What is being raised
Lambda is a "neocloud," a cloud provider that specializes in renting graphics processors, or GPUs, for AI work. Customers use them to train and run AI models without buying the hardware themselves.
| Detail | Figure |
|---|---|
| Target raise | Up to $4 billion |
| Pre-money valuation | $14.5 billion |
| Lead investors | Blackstone, Coatue Management |
| Planned IPO | 2027 |
| Previous round | $1.5 billion in November 2025, at $5.9 billion post-money |
| Round before that | $480 million Series D in February 2025 |
A pre-money valuation is what the company is worth before the new cash arrives. If Lambda raises the full $4 billion, it would be worth about $18.5 billion afterward.
Lambda "is aiming to go public in 2027, depending on execution and market conditions, according to a letter to the company's limited partners reviewed by the Journal," Reuters writes. Lambda declined to comment, PYMNTS and Stocktwits report.
Why the valuation jumped
The reason is the order book. Lambda's backlog, the value of contracts customers have signed but not yet paid out, rose from $15 billion in June to $50 billion in September, according to Reuters.
Stocktwits points to one customer behind the growth: a $35 billion contract with Anthropic. That deal was first reported in September as a $35 billion, six-year compute commitment.
The rest of the funding history shows how fast the company has grown. PYMNTS notes that Lambda also took a $275 million credit facility, arranged by JPMorgan, in August 2025. A credit facility is a loan the company can draw on as it needs.
Who runs Lambda
RuntimeWire says Lambda was founded in 2012. Michel Combes became CEO in May 2026, and co-founder Stephen Balaban is chief technology officer. Stocktwits adds that John Donovan, a former AT&T chief executive, has joined the board.
Balaban's early pitch for the company, quoted by RuntimeWire from its 2025 Series D, was "one person, one GPU." A $4 billion round for a company with a $50 billion backlog is a long way from that.
What this means for developers
Most teams meet Lambda as a place to rent GPUs by the hour. This round changes what that relationship looks like.
- Expect capacity to tighten for small users. A $50 billion backlog that includes a $35 billion contract with one AI lab means large customers have first call on new GPUs. If your team rents on demand, reserve capacity early for known training runs.
- Ask about concentration risk. When one customer makes up a large share of a provider's backlog, that customer's plans shape everyone else's service. Ask your provider how capacity is allocated when big contracts ramp up.
- Watch prices as the IPO nears. Companies preparing to list tend to focus on margins. Lock in reserved pricing now if your budget depends on it.
- Keep a second provider ready. Neoclouds compete with each other and with the big cloud platforms. Make sure your training and serving code can move between them without a rewrite.
The next public marker is the IPO filing. When it comes, it will show how much of Lambda's backlog depends on a single contract.
