ChromeOS updates end in mid-2034, short of 10 years

Google ends ChromeOS updates in mid-2034, so Chromebooks sold since mid-2024 get 8 to 10 years. Googlebook admin tools come in the second half of 2027.

Google has set an end date for ChromeOS: the operating system will get updates and security patches only until mid-2034, OSNews and Tech Times reported on September 30, 2026. That breaks Google's promise of 10 years of updates for every Chromebook. Machines bought from mid-2024 onward will now get between 8 and 10 years, depending on when they were bought.

The cut matters most to schools and businesses that bought Chromebooks on the strength of that promise. Google wants them to move to Googlebook OS, its new Android-based system, but the tools to manage it at scale are not ready yet.

What Google changed

Google's statement, quoted by OSNews, reads: "ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034." That date now applies to the whole platform.

Until now, each Chromebook came with its own Auto Update Expiration date, the day it stops getting updates. Google had promised 10 years of them. A platform-wide end in mid-2034 overrides that for newer machines. Under a full 10-year promise, a model released this fall would have been covered until about 2036. Now it stops in mid-2034, roughly eight years from now.

The move to Googlebook OS

Googlebook OS is the successor. It is built on Android 17, according to Tech Times, and the first Googlebook laptops ship in the U.S. on October 4.

Google says existing Chromebooks can make the jump, but the details are thin. Tech Times quotes Google as saying "many Chromebooks from 2021 onward will transition to Googlebook OS." OSNews describes the promise more narrowly, as covering "many newer commercial Chromebook models." Tech Times reports that no list of eligible models was published at launch.

Switching also costs money. Tech Times reports that schools and companies moving to Googlebook OS must buy new licenses, because their current ones do not carry over. Google's own wording, as quoted there: "Chrome Education Upgrade and Chrome Enterprise Upgrade licenses authorize management of ChromeOS devices specifically." Prices for the new licenses have not been announced.

The management tools come late. Enterprise tools for running fleets of Googlebook devices arrive in the second half of 2027, Tech Times reports. That is about nine months after the October 4 launch.

Why schools feel it most

Chromebooks are a fixture in classrooms. Tech Times cites 38 million active Chromebooks in the K-12 market, and reports that 93% of U.S. school districts planned to buy Chromebooks in 2026.

OSNews calls the change anti-consumer. Its author also raises e-waste concerns, and questions whether Googlebook OS might one day be dropped in turn.

What this means for developers

Re-check every Chromebook end date you rely on. Fleet plans built on the 10-year promise are now wrong for any model released after mid-2024. Put mid-2034 as the hard ceiling in your asset records, and plan replacements from there.

Stop buying ChromeOS-only hardware for long lives. A Chromebook bought today gets about eight years at most. If you need a device to last a decade, wait for Google's list of models that can move to Googlebook OS, and buy from that list.

Budget for new licenses. Schools and companies that manage Chromebooks will need Googlebook licenses to manage the same machines after a switch. Ask your Google reseller for prices and for any credit on existing ChromeOS licenses before you commit.

Do not migrate before the tools exist. Central management for Googlebook devices is due in the second half of 2027. Until then, a large fleet on Googlebook OS is harder to control than one on ChromeOS. Pilot a few devices first.

If you build software for Chromebooks, test on Android 17. Googlebook OS is built on it, so Android apps and web apps are the safest bets. Anything that depends on ChromeOS-only features needs a plan before 2034.
