This week's Tools This Week list has eight developer tools, from a major SvelteKit release to a 1.0 protocol for AI agents. Seven of the eight are free and open source. Two are still in beta or pre-release, so check their status before you build on them.

For web and cloud developers

SvelteKit is the app framework built on Svelte, a JavaScript UI library. Version 3 moves its configuration into vite.config.ts, the file for Vite, the build tool SvelteKit already uses. It also switches to standard #lib imports, a built-in way to name a folder of shared code.

Cloudflare's cf CLI puts the whole public Cloudflare API in one command-line tool. It also handles Workers projects, Cloudflare's code that runs on its servers, and uses TypeScript for configuration. It is in open beta.

WSL containers bring Linux containers to Windows. WSL, the Windows Subsystem for Linux, now ships a wslc command for building, running and deploying them. Developers can also drive it from a C# or C++ API.

For AI app builders

AG-UI is an open protocol for connecting AI agents to the screens people use. Version 1.0 freezes the specification, so apps built on it should not break with each update. It comes with SDKs for TypeScript, Python and .NET.

pgEdge Starfleet is managed Postgres aimed at AI apps. It offers copy-on-write branches, which are cheap copies of a database for testing. It also has an MCP server, so AI assistants can query it through the Model Context Protocol, and a pgvector search API for similarity search.

Magnitude runs open models on your own machine. It tunes its kernels, the small programs that do the heavy math, to your specific hardware so models run faster.

For your own machine

NSL keeps development tools out of your main Linux system. It installs them in Debian or Fedora machines run by systemd-nspawn, a lightweight container tool built into many Linux systems. It is still at a pre-release v0.x version.

Reladraw is a language for drawing diagrams as text. Instead of auto-layout or dragging boxes around, you place each box relative to the others.

What this means for developers

Try the stable tools first. SvelteKit 3, WSL containers, AG-UI 1.0, Magnitude and Reladraw are all free to test today. The cf CLI is in open beta and NSL is pre-release, so keep them out of production scripts for now.

Plan the SvelteKit 3 upgrade. Moving configuration into vite.config.ts touches every project. Upgrade a small app first and note what breaks before scheduling the rest.

Check the licenses. Every free tool here uses MIT or Apache-2.0, two permissive licenses that allow commercial use. That makes them easy to bring into company projects.

Use the trial window well. pgEdge Starfleet gives 14 days free before paid plans start at $25 a month. Test branching and vector search on your real data in that time.

This is the first dated edition of the series. The current list always lives on the Tools This Week page.
