Photon, a startup that connects AI agents to messaging apps, has raised a $4.5 million seed round, TechCrunch reported on October 1, 2026. Gradient and A* co-led the round. Photon's bet is that people will reach software through a text thread in iMessage or WhatsApp rather than a separate app on their phone.
The company makes that bet loudly. On September 17, it held a "funeral for mobile apps" in a San Francisco church, with panels featuring speakers from Vercel, Stripe and OpenAI, TechCrunch reports.
What Photon builds
Photon gives developers one interface for many messaging channels. TechCrunch describes it as a unified API, a single set of commands, that lets an agent talk over iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS and RCS, email and voice. An agent written once can then reach users wherever they already text.
The core product is Spectrum. Photon's website calls it "an open-source framework that connects your agents to iMessage, Telegram, WhatsApp, X, Discord, Instagram, and other interfaces people use every day." The site lists features such as group chats, rich media, reactions and generative mini apps inside iMessage.
Those mini apps are the newest part. Tech Funding News reports that Spectrum can put buttons, forms and live interfaces right inside an iMessage thread, and that this requires iOS 26. Photon also ships the official iMessage adapter for Vercel's Chat SDK, a toolkit for building chat interfaces.
The platform is SOC 2 Type II certified and HIPAA-compliant, TechCrunch reports, which matters for health and finance customers. It comes with a command-line tool and an observability suite for watching how agents behave.
Who invested, and the traction
Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures and Karman joined the round, along with angel investors. The founders are young. Chief executive Daniel Tian left the University of Pennsylvania's M&T program, TechCrunch says. Chief technology officer Ryan Zhu left high school and was a visiting student at the MIT Media Lab.
"We started Photon because a friend could not tell our agent from a person in his own iMessage thread," Tian told Tech Funding News.
Photon reports these numbers:
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Developer sign-ups | More than 40,000 | TechCrunch |
| Revenue growth | 10x in four months, May to August | TechCrunch, Tech Funding News |
| Churn | Under 3% | TechCrunch |
| Message volume | 5x growth in September | Tech Funding News |
| End users | More than 1 million in under a year | Tech Funding News |
| Paying customers | 50 | Tech Funding News |
TechCrunch names Corgi Insurance, Boardy, Ditto, Rho, Fliptexts and Slashy as customers. Pricing starts with a free tier for up to 10 users, followed by three paid plans.
The money will go toward scaling iMessage business messaging for regulated industries, building out the SDK and signing up design partners, Tech Funding News reports. The same report lists funded rivals. Linq has a $20 million Series A and Poke a $15 million seed, while Jelou has raised $10 million and Wassist $1.1 million.
What this means for developers
Try the open-source framework first. Spectrum is open source, so you can test an agent over iMessage or WhatsApp before you pay anything. The free tier covers up to 10 users, which is enough for a prototype with real testers.
Write the agent once, then pick channels. A unified API means the same agent logic can answer over SMS, WhatsApp and email. Keep channel-specific features, such as iMessage mini apps, in a thin layer on top so the core stays portable.
Check the iOS 26 requirement. The interactive iMessage features need iOS 26. Users on older iPhones will see plain messages, so design a text-only fallback for every button or form.
Understand the platform risk. iMessage, WhatsApp and the other channels belong to other companies, which set their own rules. Before you build a business on one channel, read how Photon connects to it and what that platform allows for business messaging.
Plan for compliance early. If you handle health or financial data, SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance on the vendor side helps, but it does not cover your own agent. Log what your agent says, and give users a clear way to reach a person.
