**By the numbers:**

- $46.72B - third-quarter revenue, up 41.2% in US dollars
- 68.7% - rise in net profit, to NT$763.06 billion
- 68% - of revenue from high-performance computing, including AI chips
- $54.3B - top of TSMC's fourth-quarter revenue guidance

**TSMC Q3 2026 wafer revenue by process:**

- 3nm: 33%
- 5nm: 28%
- 7nm: 10%
- 2nm: 8%

TSMC reported record third-quarter 2026 results on October 15, as demand for AI chips kept growing. Revenue reached US$46.72 billion, up 41.2% from a year earlier, and net profit rose 68.7% to NT$763.06 billion. TSMC's revenue is tied directly to AI chip orders from cloud companies and accelerator makers, Investing.com notes, so the results are a read on AI hardware spending.

## TSMC's third-quarter numbers

TSMC, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, reported these figures, according to its [investor relations page](https://investor.tsmc.com/english/quarterly-results/2026/q3) and 36Kr:

| Measure | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|
| Revenue (US dollars) | $46.72 billion, up 41.2% from a year earlier and 16.2% from Q2 |
| Revenue (Taiwan dollars) | NT$1.49 trillion, up 50.9% |
| Net profit | NT$763.06 billion, up 68.7% |
| Earnings per share | NT$29.43, up from NT$27.25 in Q2 |
| Gross margin | 66.4% |
| Operating margin | 58.7% |

Revenue beat TSMC's own guidance of $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion. The operating margin also beat its range, while the gross margin landed inside it. It was the sixth straight quarter of record profit, [Yahoo Finance reports](https://www.aol.com/articles/tsmc-posts-record-profit-amid-104536000.html). Earnings per US-listed share were $4.60, above the $4.42 analysts expected, Investing.com says.

## AI chips drive the mix

High-performance computing, the segment that includes AI accelerators, made up 68% of revenue. It grew 22% from the second quarter. Smartphones were 21%. Chips made on 7nm and smaller processes brought in 79% of wafer revenue.

The newest 2nm process reached 8% of wafer revenue. Starting mass production had a cost, though. Gross margin fell 1.3 points from the second quarter, mainly because of the 2nm ramp, [BigGo Finance](https://finance.biggo.com/news/US_TSM_2026-10-15) reports.

"Demand for our leading-edge technologies continue to be extremely robust," CEO C.C. Wei said, as quoted by Yahoo Finance. Wei also said "the gap between demand and supply are still quite big," according to BigGo.

## Guidance and spending plans

TSMC gave this outlook for the fourth quarter of 2026:

| Q4 2026 guidance | Range |
|---|---|
| Revenue | $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion |
| Gross margin | 65% to 67% |
| Operating margin | 56.5% to 58.5% |

At the midpoint, that is about 14% more than the third quarter and 58% more than a year earlier, BigGo and 36Kr calculate. TSMC expects full-year 2026 revenue to grow about 44% in US dollars.

Chief financial officer Wendell Huang kept the 2026 capital budget at $60 billion to $64 billion. Huang expects spending from 2026 to 2028 "to be even more significantly higher than the past three years," Yahoo Finance reports.

Capacity is growing on several fronts, BigGo and 36Kr report:

- **2nm:** capacity in 2027 will be more than double this year's.
- **A14:** the next process starts risk production in 2027 and volume production in 2028.
- **Arizona:** the second fab there starts volume production in the third quarter of 2027.
- **Japan:** the second fab there, making 3nm chips, starts volume production in 2028.

Overseas fabs cost more to run. TSMC expects them to cut gross margin by about 2 points in 2026, and possibly by 3 to 4 points in later years, 36Kr reports.

TSMC is also evaluating a site in Texas, in talks tied to Elon Musk's Terafab project, Yahoo Finance reports. "We send the teams to Texas to do all the evaluation," Wei said. Wei added that "the fab has to be run by TSMC," per BigGo.

## A cautious note for 2027

TSMC said it is "being prudent in our business planning going into 2027," Investing.com reports. It cited rising component prices and uncertainty in price-sensitive consumer markets. Analysts at Vital Knowledge said demand outside AI is more sluggish.

TSMC's Taiwan-listed shares fell 2% on Thursday, Investing.com reports. Samsung and SK Hynix each dropped more than 10%, the outlet adds; we covered the [Kospi's circuit-breaker halt](/articles/kospi-circuit-breaker-8-percent-samsung-sk-hynix-october-15/) earlier today.

## What this means for developers

For teams that build, buy or run AI infrastructure:

- **Expect tight supply to continue.** Wei says demand still outruns supply. Book cloud GPU capacity early, and keep a second provider in your plans.
- **Plan for 2nm hardware in 2027.** With 2nm capacity set to double, more chips on that process will arrive next year. Microsoft's [Maia 300](/articles/microsoft-maia-300-ai-chip-inference-hbm4-2027/), built on TSMC's N2P process, is one example.
- **Budget for higher hardware costs.** TSMC itself flags rising component prices. Teams buying servers or devices outside AI should not assume prices will fall.
- **Check the timing of local supply.** Arizona's second fab reaches volume production only in late 2027. Teams that need chips made in a specific region should build that delay into their plans.
